Workshops & Band Coaching

We are thrilled to be hosting two exciting workshops and band coaching (back by popular demand) this summer holidays!

If you have ever wanted to learn how to write a pop song, wished you could swing it like the jazz and blues greats or want to let out the rock star within you then we have everything you need this Summer. Open to all BDMA students and all friends and family are welcome too!

Please note that if you can’t make the dates listed below but are keen then please do get in touch and let us know. We already have a few students who are excited but won’t be able to come so with enough interest we may be able to organise another date!

Also, if we have offered you a free lesson as a thank you for referring us to new clients then you can also use that as credit towards any of these workshops – so book your places now!

Band Coaching

What: You may have seen the Boys Cool Jazz Band or parents band MLC at some point at our concerts – gather your friends, young and old and that could be you!

If you have a group, of any age, who would like to try playing together as a band then get in contact. The sessions are usually hosted by one of the participants and can be held over one or multiple days. BDMA band coaches Ron or Joel will guide you in getting the best sound and the best ways to arrange songs (covers or originals) and help you get that tight ensemble sound. At the end of the session the band will perform their first gig for friends and family!

  • What is band coaching?
Band coaching can take many different forms. We can help those with little experience to set up a new band, coach musicians writing their first original songs or help more experienced bands find a new direction.

The focus can range from playing together, tightness in timing, the sound of each instrument, your setup on stage, dynamics of songs and live sets, or simply how to write great music!

We can offer regular or ad hoc coaching sessions to groups of any age.

  • Why do we offer band coaching?
At BDMA we believe that learning to play with other musicians is a crucial, and often extremely fun and rewarding, part of music education. We wanted to be able to offer that opportunity to our students despite being predominantly a private music lesson service.
We also offer workshops during holidays that encompass the same skills and ideals.

  • What gave you the idea?
We first got the idea for band coaching in the Summer 2016 when we held our first ever Band Experience. A group of students spent three days learning about ensemble playing, balancing levels, exploring arrangements and putting what they were learning individually in their music lessons into some rock and roll action.
It even inspired some BDMA parents to form their own band, MLC (Mid Life Crisis) who recently performed out our Christmas concert!
And so the idea stuck!

  • How much does it cost?
Prices are £100.80 an hour (£84 + VAT) for a minimum of one hour. This is for 4 – 8 people and will rehearse round one of the members houses. Bands that rehearse regularly will be offered a performing slot at the BDMA Concerts.

  • What if we don’t want regular band coaching?
We are also happy to run Band Experiences on request as we did in the Summer of 2016.
This is perfect for those who want to enjoy a more intensive band coaching course over 2-4 days during holidays or weekends without committing to regular or ad hoc coaching sessions.
We recommend booking three hours on two or three consecutive days with a 10 – 15 minute performance at the end (ideal for holiday time) or at the weekend during term time.

  • Who runs the band coaching and Band Experiences?
All our band coaching is currently led by Ronald Maas, our lovely piano and bass tutor at BDMA who has a wealth of experience working with bands and has worked with both junior and adult groups. You can learn a little more about him on his website.
